In November
2014, the Goethe-Institut Sudan, in cooperation with several local partners and
some amazing Sudanese talents, organized a variety of workshops and a street
festival in the framework of the ongoing project series called: “Yalla! Meets
Urban Arts!” which started through the initiative of a Goethe intern who gave skateboarding-workshops
in 2013:
One year later
the “Yalla!” community is still growing and the activities are about to
continue. Building on the networks and results of last year’s activities, the
following workshops will be organized with the support of some German artists:
"Yalla!
Go paint Khartoum!" with the berlin-based artist Julia Benz, who
painted a Sudanese women wearing a tobe on a 250 qm wall in Düsseldorf,
Germany, inspired by her experience in Sudan in 2014. She combines classical
painting with street art and her pieces are colorful artworks on different
materials: canvas, walls, skateboards and more.
Julia Benz
will be supported by Nils Kasiske, a painter and sculptor from Hamburg to work
on bringing some murals into the capital in cooperation with some Sudanese
(street) artists.A second art workshop will be led by Ekaterina Koroleva who is
specialized in typography and illustration. The three artists will put an
emphasis on drawings, water color paintings, murals, paste-ups and build a
space for creative ideas.
“Yalla! Go skate Khartoum” with Samuel Beyer who has trained already kids and youths in Sajjana Center Khartoum in the creative skill of skateboarding in 2014. Having travelled many countries to spread skate culture, Samuel cannot wait to be back in Sudan and see the skateboarding community grow.

“Yalla! Go with the beat Khartoum” will be led by Akua Naru and Ahmed Nyei aka Genda. Akua Naru is an outstanding lyricist, poet and performer. Her music combines African sounds with Jazz, Blues and Soul rhythms and is surrounded by her warm and expressive voice. Genda experiencedthe natural development from a rapper to a poet over the years. His alternative rap poetry combined with the enhanced music production makes this current music a perfect blend of various cultural sounds.
Larissa Fuhrmann a Cultural Programme Coordinator at Goethe-Institut
Sudan said ( with the
project series "Yalla!” we want to foster cultural exchange between German
and Sudanese youth cultures, and establish a forum to give young people the
chance to express themselves through artistic and creative activities, and to
build long lasting networks. We give people the chance to gain an insight into
the German arts scene and various contemporary youth cultures. The arts and
cultural scene that is very vivid in Sudan gets little international attention.
Therefore we would like to support the local scenes and show the world the
outcome of our cooperation through social media, photos, documentaries and
more).
